The Kingwood High School Lady Mustangs golf team is starting its season with four returning varsity players and a new freshman. The Lady Mustangs varsity team competed against 17 other teams at the Frio Valley Ranch Country Club in Concan, Texas Nov 5-6.
The mornings were chilly but the afternoons were perfect golf weather. The girls’ first day was a solid 317 and was led by sophomore Bella Flores. She scored a -1 as her putts were falling on amazingly fast greens and she was consistent on her drives throughout the day.
The second day the Lady Mustangs came in with a low total 312. Freshman Khloe Jones scored a low +2 for the team. Her iron play was spot on as she showed great ability to make pars and birdies to get the team in great position. Junior Kate Harnett had a huge highlight of the day and scored a hole in one on hole 17 and then birdied hole 18 to bring in a solid score of +8 the second day — an incredible finish by the junior. Senior Kathy Rodriquez and junior Morgan Ankenbrandt made pars when needed and contributed to the team with solid play on a very hard course.
Bella Flores won the overall first place medal of the tournament and led the varsity team to a second place finish, three strokes behind San Antonio Reagan. The Lady Mustangs will compete this year again with a goal to win state.
