Major expansion is underway at the Golf Club of Houston. The two 18-hole courses that comprise the Club on Wilson Road just south of Beltway 8 in Fall Creek are about to get a new sister facility — a 6,000 square-foot state-of-the-art fitness center.

“We were honored to be the host for the Houston Open for 17 years, but now that it has been moved to Memorial Park in Houston, we can focus on our members,” said Reese McCall, the Club’s general manager.

Adding the fitness center will enhance the value to the members, McCall said, and will bring in a new group of members, too.

Like all businesses, the McCall and the Club were concerned during the pandemic shutdown.

“We didn’t know what to expect. But it turned out that golf is strong. We saw a surge across the country we haven’t seen since the 1970s,” he said.

“We have the largest number of members ever,” said McCall. “In fact, we are reaching our capacity on the Member Course. Prior to COVID, 50,000 rounds were played each year on our two courses. We reached 65,000 rounds during COVID and we will reach that number again this year.”

One fun addition to the Club is a three-hole, par 3 short course, according to McCall.

“Our short course is perfect for families with kids who want to come out for a little fun,” he said. “It is a fun and unique addition and we have even seen some of our older members out there playing.”

In addition to the fitness center, the Club also will add a kids care facility so parents can drop off the kids while they play a round of golf and enjoy the Club’s multiple dining options, inside or outside on their recently renovated patio.
