The Kingwood Mustangs prepared for District 22-6A play over the weekend with five games at the Clear Creek ISD Tournament where they recorded shutout wins over Clear Falls on Thursday and La Porte on Friday.
Kingwood opens district play at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it visits Atascocita.
The Mustangs then return to tournament action Thursday through Saturday in Baytown for the Battle of the Bay. Kingwood takes on Deer Park and Channelview on Thursday before facing Cy-Ranch and Kingwood Park on Friday. The Mustangs wrap up tournament play on Saturday by facing Pearland.
Kingwood concluded the CCISD Tournament on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Clear Lake. Chalin Dassau had a hit and drove in a run while Connor Johnson picked up the win with five strong innings on the mound, striking out four.
Chris Sanchez threw a complete-game four-hit shutout last week, striking out seven in a 5-0 win over Clear Falls. Thomas Larson and Nick Luckett had two hits apiece for the Mustangs and each drove in a run as did Justin Long.
Nathan Courtney followed up with a complete-game shutout of his own, tossing a one-hitter at La Porte while recording three strikeouts in a 2-0 win. Luckett added two more hits and Long delivered a hit and an RBI. Riley Bender also drove in a run.
The Mustangs also suffered one-run losses to Fort Bend Travis (3-2) and Clear Springs (6-5) in tournament play. Dassau and Nicholas Felan collected two hits apiece, and Jonathan Mendoza drove in two runs in the latter game.
They next face Atascocita at the Eagles’ field Tuesday evening, March 10 at 7 p.m. and then Cy Ranch and Kingwood Park at Sterling High School Thursday, March 12.
