The Kingwood Mustangs boys basketball team earned a pair of District 22-6A victories last week to keep pace in the hotly contested playoff race. The Mustangs opened the week with a 51-31 victory over South Houston on the road. Walker Blaine led a balanced attack with 15 points.
Nick Luckett added 11 points in the win.
Kingwood followed up with a 72-57 victory over Pasadena Memorial on Friday behind a team effort on its home court.
The wins were crucial for the Mustangs in maintaining their place in the district standings. Entering this week’s play, Kingwood remains in third place with a league record of 8-2.
Summer Creek, ranked No. 3 in the state, continued its grip on the district lead and stands at 9-0 coming into this week’s action. Atascocita, ranked No. 7 in the state, stays in second place at 9-1.
Kingwood holds a two-game lead on fourth-place Dobie (6-4) and is three games up on fifth-place Humble (5-5) heading into the homestretch of the regular season.
The Mustangs visit Dobie on Tuesday before hosting Summer Creek on Friday in a pair of key district games this week. Both matchups are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
