The Kingwood Mustangs will look to get back to their winning ways as the postseason begins this week. Kingwood takes on Beaumont West Brook in a Region III-6A Division II bi-district playoff game at 7 p.m. Friday in Beaumont Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs finished the 2019 regular season with a 5-5 record, including a 5-3 ledger in District 22-6A play, which earned the fourth and final playoff berth from the district. Kingwood enters the playoffs along with district qualifiers Atascocita, Dobie and Humble.
Kingwood saw a two-game win streak snapped by Humble, 31-21, in the regular season finale. The Mustangs had won five of their previous six games by a combined score of 152-69, and look to return to winning form on Friday.
The winner of Friday's playoff opener advances to the area round to meet the winner of the Strake Jesuit-Clear Creek bi-district playoff game.
Statistically, Kingwood quarterback Grant Wall leads the way with 1,449 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 192 yards and three more scores.
Kasey Duplechin leads the ground attack with 755 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. In addition, Duplechin has 212 receiving yards this season and two touchdowns.
Jack Dugas leads the Kingwood receiving corps with 579 yards on 31 receptions and seven touchdowns.
The West Brook Bruins (8-2) counter with quarterback Troy Yowman, who threw for 1,565 yards and 16 touchdowns through the first nine games of the season. Yowman threw just one interception in his first 128 pass attempts.
Kingwood's Ryan Jones will be among the many keeping a watchful eye on the Bruins' quarterback. Jones has two interceptions this season.
