The Kingwood Mustangs closed the 2019 regular season with a 31-21 loss to Humble on Friday at Turner Stadium. The Mustangs, 5-5 for the season and 5-3 in District 22-6A play, have a bye this week in preparation for the playoffs.
They will finish fourth in the district standings behind fellow playoff qualifiers Atascocita, Dobie and Humble.
On Friday, the Mustangs trailed 24-0 in the fourth quarter and despite a furious rally, came up just short against their neighboring rivals.
The late rally began with a 4-yard touchdown run by Kasey Duplechin, who rushed for 45 yards in the game and also caught a pass. Duplechin is Kingwood’s leading rusher this season with 755 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Then quarterback Grant Wall threw 22 yards to Jack Dugas for another score. Wall completed 13 passes for 86 yards, and for the season has thrown for 1,449 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Dugas was the leading target on Friday, catching four passes for 40 yards. He also leads the Mustangs in receiving for the season with 31 catches for 579 yards and seven touchdowns.
Ryan Jones completed the scoring on Friday by scooping up a fumble and racing 49 yards for a touchdown. It was one of five turnovers the Kingwood defense was able to force.
