It was the fourth quarter that got away from the Kingwood Mustangs in their 2019 season opener against Ridge Point on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Turner Stadium. The game hung in the balance until the visiting Panthers scored twice in the final period to pull away for a 35-16 victory.
It was close up until that final quarter. After Ridge Point jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Mustangs kept their non-district foe in sight, drawing to within 21-16 by halftime on touchdown passes of 87 and 30 yards from quarterback Grant Wall to Jack Dugas and a 41-yard field goal by Kaden Wooster.
It stayed that way until early in the fourth quarter when Ridge Point finally put some distance between the two teams with short touchdown runs.
Wall completed 11 of 22 passes for 207 yards. Dugas hauled in four passes in the game, totaling 123 yards, and Cade Burgess came up with four more catches for 40 yards.
But Kingwood managed just 40 yards rushing and that was the difference in the game. Kasey Duplechin, who caught two passes for 34 yards, led all Mustangs rushers with 21 yards on 10 carries. Wall added 13 rushing yards on two tries.
The Mustangs look to bounce back this week when they visit Dekaney for a 7 p.m. Thursday non-district game at Leonard George Stadium.
