The Kingwood volleyball team played in just one match this week in preparation for its final push before district season begins.
The Lady Mustangs return to action with a busy final pre-district week. Kingwood hosts Clear Brook before playing Thursday and Saturday at the Clear Creek ISD Tournament in League City. In between tournament games, the Lady Mustangs open District 22-6A play at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Atascocita.
On the court early last week, Kingwood dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-17) decision at No. 11 state-ranked Ridge Point. Megan Wilson had 10 kills to pace Kingwood while Breanna Burrell added seven and Sophie Ocampo five kills.
Jordan Rambo handed out 16 assists and Sydney Hicks added seven more. Lizzy Young came up with 12 digs with Rachel Easom adding nine.
The district season appears to be wide open with only Atascocita (11-9) and Summer Creek (11-10) having won more pre-district matches than losses. Defending district champion Kingwood, which went unbeaten in district play a year ago, is 7-9 over a tough pre-district schedule.
The Lady Mustangs were 3-11 in pre-district play last season before blowing through 22-6A competition. In going undefeated, the Lady Mustangs lost just three games in 16 district matches.
Summer Creek, which gave Kingwood its toughest district match (3-2), appears poised once again to contend for district honors. Its only two district losses were both to Kingwood.
Humble could be ready to make some noise as well, winning four matches last week leading up to district play.
