The Huffman Hargrave football team is preparing for the 2019 season using momentum from the program's first playoff victory in seven seasons to build on. The Falcons open the 2019 season at Liberty on Friday, Aug. 30, in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Second team all-district quarterback Justin Shively returns to lead the Falcons. He is one of 25 seniors on a roster that features nine returning starters on offense and another six on defense. Also among the senior leaders include first team all-district standouts Peyton Pierson (wide receiver/defensive back) and Noah Zamora (linebacker). First team all-district running back A.J. San Miguel is another experienced talent returning to the Falcons squad.
All-district honorable mentions Justin Fields and Brendyn Cosby, both junior defensive backs, will also be called upon again in 2019 for leadership roles.
The Lady Eagles won three of four matches and finished in third place in the silver bracket of the Spring ISD Varsity Volleyball Tournament. Atascocita opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Hightower and after a 2-0 loss to Klein Collins, bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Cy-Ridge. Earlier in the week, Atascocita defeated Dickinson, 3-1, on the road.
The Lady Wildcats volleyball team continues to prepare for the upcoming District 22-6A season. Humble dropped matches in the Aldine Tournament to Elkins (2-0), MacArthur (2-0), Goose Creek Memorial (2-0) and Beaumont United (2-1). Humble opens district play at Sam Rayburn on Aug. 30.
The Kingwood football team will scrimmage Conroe at 7 p.m. Thursday in Turner Stadium. The game was moved from Kingwood High School as new lights are being installed for the upcoming season.
The Lady Panthers split last week's matches, defeating Friendswood, 3-1, before falling 3-2 to Kingwood. Senior Libby Overmyer and junior Erika Williams lead the way at the net for Kingwood Park. Junior Anya Arrington leads the team in digs while senior Avery Hill is the assist leader.
It was a busy week for the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team. After falling 3-0 at Shadow Creek, the Lady Bulldogs swept Beaumont United and Eisenhower at the Aldine Tournament before falling at Clear Brook and bowing to George Ranch in tournament play. Senior McKay Wilson had seven kills in the win over Beaumont United and junior Bailey Bryant handed out 11 assists. In the win over Eisenhower, sophomores Jozie Dhayer and Kendall McComas served up five aces apiece.
