While school is just beginning, the volleyball schedule is already in full swing. Kingwood went 5-4 in the first action-packed week of the 2019 season.
The Lady Mustangs won one of two playoff matches at the prestigious 58-team 2019 Adidas John Turner Classic in Pearland.
Kingwood opened pool play with a sweep of Dickinson (25-13, 25-15) before falling 2-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-19) to Shadow Creek and 2-0 (25-11, 25-21) to Episcopal.
The Lady Mustangs had much better success the second round of pool play, sweeping all three matches. Kingwood started out with a 25-10, 25-15 victory over district foe Pasadena Memorial before defeating Nederland 25-23, 25-22 and Barbers Hill 25-23, 25-16.
Then it was on to the Flight 1 playoff bracket where the Lady Mustangs rallied to defeat Texas City 21-25, 25-21, 25-16 before dropping a hard-fought 25-12, 22-25, 25-22 decision to Clear Creek in the bracket semifinals.
The Lady Mustangs opened the 2019 season with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) loss at Cy-Fair.
So far this season, senior Breanna Burrell leads the team at the net with 119 kills, averaging 5.2 per set. Junior Temi Areola is getting it done on the defensive side of the net with a team-high 12 blocks.
Junior Jordan Rambo sets the offense in motion with a team-best 125 assists, averaging 5.4 per set. She also leads the team with 22 service aces while senior Lizzy Young paces the team with 124 total digs, averaging 5.4 per set.
Kingwood will host its own tournament this Thursday and Saturday, Aug. 15 and 17.
