Katy Janes led Huffman Hargrave to its second state championship in five years, tossing a pair of shutouts at the UIL Class 4A State Tournament at McCombs Field in Austin on the campus of the University of Texas.
In throwing 4-0 and 11-0 shutouts over Fredericksburg in the state semifinals on Thursday, and Anna in the state championship game on Saturday, Janes struck out a total of 26 batters and gave up just three hits.
The 4A Most Valuable Player also contributed at the plate as well, belting a two-run homer in Saturday’s big finale while going 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the state champion Lady Falcons who finish the season with a record of 38-7-1.
Janes led Hargrave to the ultimate prize with a personal record of 27-5 as the Lady Falcons completed their run to the title, winning 14 of their last 15 games.
On Saturday, the Lady Falcons scored three runs in each of the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to shorten the title game via the run-rule. Hargrave banged out 13 hits, three of those from Christin Haygood, who drove in a run and scored another. All nine starters either drove in a run or scored one, or both.
Along with Janes, Hagen Pike and Kenzie Gates each had two hits. Pike scored twice and drove in a run while Gates scored two runs and added a pair of RBIs.
The Lady Falcons advanced to the state championship game with a 4-0 win over Fredericksburg on Thursday. Janes struck out 15 batters in firing a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She faced just 22 batters, one over the minimum while tossing the gem.
She helped her cause at the plate with a run-scoring single in the third inning, plating Alli Humphries who went 1-for-3 and reached on an error twice, both times scoring Dez Cardenas (1-for-2).
Kyndel Berard added an insurance run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Haygood, who collected two of the Lady Falcons’ six hits.
