Kingwood
Kaitlyn Charles shot a 156 (78-78) to pace the Kingwood girls golf team at the UIL Class 6A State Tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club last week in Georgetown.

The Lady Mustangs placed 10th in the team standings with a score of 633 (325-308). Libby Singleton (81-78 - 159), Megan Tragesser (84-75 - 159), and Kaetlin Halseth (83-77 - 160) followed with Rylie Cerny carding a 164 (83-81). The boys’ state tournament is set for May 20-21 at Legacy Hills. Holden Hamilton, Damin Strydom, Hayes Hamilton, Ty Nicar, and Luke Slayton comprise the Kingwood boys team.

Atascocita

Senior Caleb Cannon threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out six, in a 10-0 win over Clear Springs, then D.J. Taylor and Clay Bradford combined for five of the Eagles’ 10 hits in a 9-8 victory and a sweep of the region quarterfinals playoff series late last week. Atascocita (29-8), winners in 19 of its last 21 games, advances to the region semifinals this week. Tyler Bird collected three hits and drove in two runs in the series opener while Taylor and Macrae Kendrick added two hits apiece and Brice Matthews drove in two runs.

Athletes in golf and tennis ended long droughts. Sophomore medalist Avery Nolte shot a 173 (85-88) at the UIL State 4A Golf Tournament last week at Plum Creek Golf Resort in Kyle. Nolte finished 31st in the field. She is believed to be the first girls’ golfer to ever qualify for the state tournament from the school. In addition, the mixed doubles team of seniors Garrett Goodman and Rachel Wilkens qualified for the UIL Class 4A State Tennis Tournament at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station. It’s the first time in more than four decades that Huffman had a tennis player qualify for the state tournament. The mixed doubles team fell 6-0, 6-0 in its state tournament quarterfinals match.

Humble

The Wildcats had several athletes officially sign college scholarships early this month. Among them were football standouts Isaiah Robinson (Navarro Jr. College), Jarrell Wheeler (Bethany College) and Glenn White (Louisiana College). Basketball signees included Chyndall Daniels (Schreiner College), Melanie Wenkebach (Rust College), and Maribel Gomez (Esslesia College). Track and field standout Jaden Johnson signed with Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Elise Parel placed fourth at the UIL Class 5A State Golf Tournament last week at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown. Parel qualified for the state tournament as a medalist by capturing the Region III championship. She shot a 145, which included a sizzling 71 on the final round to finish just two strokes behind the state champion.

Summer Creek

Several outstanding athletes signed college scholarships early this month. That large group includes baseball’s Daniel Garza and Matthew Young (Schreiner University) and Dylan Smith (St. Edwards University). Track and field athletes Mason Schrade (University of Houston), Amiya Matthews (Nicholls State University), Jaylon Jacobs (Northwestern State University) and Ashton Frey (Southwestern University) also signed college scholarships. Basketball players Dylan Phillip (Oklahoma Wesleyan University) and Teagan Brouwer (Cowley College) signed, as did cross country standout Avery Martinez (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor). Soccer scholarships were signed by Omar Avila (Marymount University) and Luis Civallero (Hendrix College) while swimmer Magdelene Gullion signed to Hendrix College.
