The Summer Creek girls’ basketball team (33-6) won the Region III-6A Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23 with a 72-63 victory over Westside at the Merrell Center in Katy. The Lady Bulldogs advance to the UIL Class 6A State Tournament at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The Lady Bulldogs take on DeSoto at either 7 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 1 in the state semifinals. The UIL Class 6A Championship Game is set for 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2.
The Lady Bulldogs took down Cy-Creek, 65-54, earlier in the region semifinals. Maliyah Johnson scored 17 points and Halle Jones added 12 more to lead the team to victory.
Greg Hulse, Darius Dugas and Jacob Harvey all scored in double figures to help lead the Huffman Hargrave Falcons to a 61-56 victory over Furr last week in a boys’ basketball area round-playoff game.
With the victory, the Falcons advance to the region quarterfinals where they will face Silsbee at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in Winnie at East Chambers High School.
Hulse poured in 22 points while Dugas scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Harvey pumped in 16 points in the victory for the Falcons, who improved to 31-5 for the season.
The Atascocita girls’ basketball team reached the Region III-6A Tournament at the Merrell Center in Katy. The 31-8 Lady Eagles, District 22-6A champions, reached the region semifinals before falling to Westside in a 45-44 heartbreaker.
Brittney Stafford led the team in scoring this season, averaging 12.2 points per game while Kyleigh Mcguire led the team in rebounds, averaging right at 10 per game. Elyssa Coleman was a defensive force in the paint this season.
The boys’ basketball team defeated West Brook 67-60 in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Pearland Dawson 64-53 in an area round-playoff game on Friday, Feb. 22. Justin Lawson poured in 30 points to lead the Wildcats past West Brook. Humble finishes the 2018-19 season with a record of 25-13.
The Lady Mustangs soccer team improved to 13-1-3 recently with a 2-0 blanking of Atascocita. Savannah Moore scored one goal and Elle Smith added another with an assist from Catherine Childs.
It was Kingwood’s 11th shutout of the season and fifth consecutive. The Lady Mustangs have shut out seven opponents in their last eight matches. At 8-0-1, Kingwood sits atop the District 22-6A standings.
Allie Byrd earned the girls’ basketball District 20-5A MVP Award for her outstanding play this season in leading the Lady Panthers (24-11) to the postseason. The senior averaged 20 points and 18 rebounds per game this season.
Teammates Shelby Rollo and Katey Searcy earned all-district first team honors while Chloe Gresham made the all-district second team. Aliyah Bustamante, Kaylin Daniel and Kaitlyn Goulder were named to the honorable mention squad.
