The Kingwood Lady Mustangs soccer team prepared for the District 22-6A opener with four victories at the Humble Classic recently.
The Lady Mustangs, now 4-1 for the season, open District 22-6A play at home on Tuesday with Atascocita. Kingwood then travels to Georgetown for matches Thursday through Saturday at the Lady’s Governors Cup.
Kingwood opened the 2019 season in impressive fashion, outscoring the opposition 23-4 over four matches, Jan. 3-5.
Emma Ebert scored three goals and added an assist in an 8-1 victory over Katy in the season opener. Jenelle Dumais added two goals and freshman Elle Smith recorded her first goal and assist. Cami Wall was stellar in goal.
The Lady Mustangs also got goals from Annika Miller and Savannah Moore, and assists came from Haley Fetterman, Jenna Bodron, Cadyn Hulse and Elle Smith.
Kingwood then continued tournament play by blanking Cy-Springs, 8-0. Eight different players scored goals. Sarah Schumacher, Emily Zerkel, Isabel Shanahan and Caroline Doiron were among those finding the back of the net for Kingwood.
Moore scored twice and added an assist as Kingwood built a 4-1 lead and then held off Cy-Woods, 4-3, before the Lady Mustangs closed out tournament play with a 3-0 victory over Clear Lake. Ebert scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the way.
Kingwood dropped a 3-2 score at Katy Seven Lakes on Jan. 8 in the final tune-up before district play. Cat Childs scored on a penalty kick before Seven Lakes responded with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. Ebert tied it with an unassisted goal, but Seven Lakes scored the final goal of the match.
