Basketball season began in earnest when the Kingwood girls’ basketball team opened District 22-6A play at home with Atascocita. The Lady Mustangs fell 68-25 to a powerful Lady Eagles squad.
The Lady Mustangs opened the season with a 2-9 record that included victories over New Caney (42-31) and Porter (51-33). The relatively inexperienced team is led by senior Anna Chong, an honorable mention all-district player from last season. Seniors Grace Larimore, Kayla Zettlemoyer and Tori McDonald also return along with juniors Maddie Vanderpool and Mary Beth Urwiler.
The Kingwood boys’ basketball team prepared for District 22-6A play with a challenging schedule that included a couple of big tournaments. The Mustangs compiled a 6-7 record heading into district play, competing in the Texas Invitational in Pasadena as well as the Austin Anderson Tournament more recently.
The Mustangs took a pair of games heading into district play. Kingwood claimed victories over C.E. King (53-46) and Porter (51-33).
Earlier wins over La Porte (62-33), and Fort Bend Austin (67-51) gave the Mustangs the consolation title of the Division II Bronze bracket of the Texas Invitational. Sophomore Billy Gould was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Mustangs’ roster includes six seniors. Ian Extra and Ryan Michie, along with Carson Cato, Kyle Burton, Lief Kindig, and Carson Dick, round out the senior class. Juniors Nick Luckett, Nick Neuman, Blake Porter and Caleb Donovan make up another group, with Gould and Jake Nichols rounding out the roster in the sophomore class.
