The 2018 season came to an end for the Kingwood Mustangs following a 56-14 loss to Beaumont West Brook in the first round of the Class 6A, Division II football playoffs recently at Beaumont Memorial ISD Stadium.
Kingwood finishes another successful season with a 7-4 record while the Bruins, district 21-6A runner up, improved to 9-2.
The Bruins had things going their way from the outset, racing to a 34-0 lead at halftime before rolling up 611 total yards of offense. They led 41-0 before Kingwood got on the scoreboard.
The Mustangs managed just 87 passing yards and another 75 yards rushing. Senior Casey Roth led the Mustangs in rushing with 38 yards on six carries, including a 16-yard run. Blake Parr added 19 yards on eight tries and Ben Jones finished with 15 yards on six rushing attempts.
They scored initially on a trick play in the third quarter with senior wide receiver Grayson Morgan taking a pass from quarterback Grant Wall at the line of scrimmage. Morgan then threw the ball back across the field to Wall, who was escorted to the end zone by a host of blockers to complete a 44-yard touchdown run.
Kingwood scored the more conventional way in the fourth quarter when Wall threw 32 yards to Jack Dugas for a touchdown. Dugas caught two passes for a team-high 46 yards.
Senior Michael Van Uden led the Mustangs defense with 10 tackles. Seniors Matthew Wheatley and Bryce Sniderwin combined for another 10 tackles while each collected two assists.
