Kingwood moved one step closer to the playoffs with a 42-6 victory on the road Friday over Pasadena. The Mustangs close the regular season on Saturday when they play visitors to Humble in a 4 p.m. game at Turner Stadium.
The Mustangs improved to 6-3 overall and more importantly 5-2 in District 22-6A play with a complete victory in all phases of the game. The offense rolled up 301 yards while Kingwood’s stingy defense yielded only 93 yards on the ground.Ben Jones ran for three touchdowns and Grant Wall threw for two more as the Mustangs galloped to a 28-0 halftime lead and coasted.
Jones scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and then added third-quarter scoring jaunts of 17 and 22 yards to put the game away. Kingwood took a 42-0 lead into the fourth quarter, and Jones finished with 83 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Wall threw for 82 yards and two of his four completions, in eight passing attempts, went for touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Zach Rogers and then closed the first-half scoring with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Cade Purcell.
Wall also completed two passes for 29 yards to Jack Dugas.
The Mustangs’ relentless ground attack was led by Blake Parr, who rushed for 117 yards on 16 carries, including a 6-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
Kingwood currently stands in third place behind district frontrunners Atascocita and Summer Creek, two teams that slugged it out on Friday for the top spot in the district championship race won by Atascocita, 36-35. Four teams from each district advance to the playoffs.
