It was a happy Homecoming for the Kingwood Mustangs on Friday at Turner Stadium. Earning their first victory this season in District 22-6A play, the Mustangs blanked Sam Rayburn 50-0 to improve to 1-1 in district play and 2-2 overall.
It was a dominating effort in all phases of the game. While Kingwood held the Texans to 83 total yards, it was an impressive display of offense that totaled 383 yards. In addition, special teams tallied a score when Brandon Lewis returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Casey Roth scored touchdowns both times he ran the ball, sprinting 21 and 47 yards for first-half scores as Kingwood rolled up a 37-0 lead at halftime. Grant Wall and Carter Amarantos added second-quarter touchdowns on runs of 1 and 41 yards respectively.
Kicker Kaden Wooster booted a 47-yard field goal before the Mustangs added second-half touchdowns on a 34-yard run from Ben Jones, and a 32-yard fumble return by Aidan Bell.
Blake Parr led a balanced Mustangs rushing attack with 70 yards on four carries, including a 56-yard dash. Cade Burgess also contributed with 47 rushing yards on four carries.
Garrett Graham led all receivers with 66 yards on two pass receptions.
The Mustangs dropped a 27-20 heartbreaker to Atascocita on Sept. 14 at Turner Stadium. In a back-and-forth game with three lead changes and twice tied, the Eagles prevailed.
Kingwood’s Casey Roth led all rushers with 127 on 15 carries, including an electrifying 51-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter to open the scoring.
Quarterback Grant Wall threw for 129 yards (6-for-13). His 2-yard touchdown pass to Payton Campbell with time running out in the first half, sent the teams to the locker room at halftime in a 14-14 tie.
Kicker Kaden Wooster booted his first of two field goals, a 30-yarder, to give the Mustangs a 17-14 edge with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter. He added a 37-yarder late in the fourth quarter to close the scoring after Atascocita regained the lead for good with a pair of touchdowns.
Blake Parr added 81 yards rushing on 12 carries for Kingwood and caught two passed for 28 yards. Garrett Graham hauled in a 50-yard pass and Jack Dugas caught a 35-yarder.
The Mustangs visit South Houston on Friday for a 7 p.m. game at Pasadena Veterans Memorial Stadium before hosting Pasadena Memorial on Thursday, Oct. 4, in a 7 p.m. start at Turner Stadium.
