It will be a somewhat different set of opponents but the goals are the same for Kingwood boys and girls cross country teams. Both seek to defend their district crowns and move on from there.
Following realignment, Kingwood is matched up in District 22-6A with Pasadena ISD schools Dobie, Memorial, South Houston, Sam Rayburn and Pasadena, along with Humble ISD schools Summer Creek, Atascocita and Humble, which moves up in class from 5A. Kingwood does remain in Region 3.
Once again heavy favorites in the newly formed district, Kingwood looks to improve on last year’s finish at the state meet. Both boys and girls teams won district titles and each placed second at regionals. The boys ran sixth at the state meet while the girls squad placed 15th in the team standings.
Nick Majerus led the boys team. As a sophomore, Majerus ran third overall at the 2017 state meet in a time of 15 minutes, 11 seconds. It was an improvement over his district-winning time of 15:38.
In his junior season, Carter Storm finished 12th overall at the state meet in 15:27 after running second at district (15:47) and eighth at regionals (16:36) behind Majerus (sixth in 16:20) and incoming senior Trent Nolen (eighth in 16:22).
In her sophomore season, Rachel James paced the girls team, running 33rd overall at the state meet (18:54) after running second at both the district (19:16) and regional (19:03) meets.
James led a trio of Kingwood runners to the finish line at the district meet. However, the other two were seniors (Jessica Hergott and Megan Eichler) and will be sorely missed. Daniella Wisniewski was Kingwood’s second finisher behind James at regionals. As a sophomore Wisniewski ran 19th overall at the region meet (19:52) and was the Lady Mustangs’ fourth finisher at the state meet.
Incoming seniors Allie Self and Rachel Braden also competed for Kingwood at the 2017 state meet.
The regular season begins at the Clear Lake Falcon Invitational Aug. 31. Kingwood hosts the annual Andy Wells Invitational Sept. 15, leading up to the district meet the following month at Atascocita. The state meet is set for Nov. 3 in Round Rock.
