Kingwood baseball is picking up where it left off.
The Mustangs, fresh off a 26-6 district and bi-district championship season under head coach Kelly Mead, are already piling up the victories in 2018.
With a solid group of returning starters, the Mustangs posted an 11-2-2 record over their first 15 games leading up to the District 21-6A opener at 7 p.m. Tuesday with Atascocita at Summer Creek High School.
Masyn Winn, last year’s district Newcomer of the Year and All-State selection, led the team to its fast start, hitting .467 with a homer and six RBIs in the first week of the season. But the sophomore didn’t stop there. On the mound, Winn recorded 28 strikeouts over two games, including 15 in a 3-0 shutout of Kingwood Park, while allowing a combined two hits in those two outings.
The Stanford verbal commit is one of five first-team all-district players returning for the Mustangs this season. Senior catcher Austin Flematti and senior pitcher Cody Lancaster lead the group that also includes junior outfielder Carter Amarantos and sophomore infielder Tre Richardson.
Senior outfielder Ben Cegelski, a second-team all-district pick last season, also returns to help bolster a solid squad.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 14 in the state by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, have also received stellar pitching performances from Cameron Huff and Sam Friday among others.
Following the district opener with Atascocita, the Mustangs travel to Goose Creek Memorial for a Friday game before visiting Channelview for a Tuesday, March 20 date. Kingwood returns home Friday, March 23, to take on North Shore at Summer Creek High School.
All games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
