It was a season of heartache and jubilation, of tragedy and triumph. The Kingwood Mustangs persevered in the face of Hurricane Harvey. Despite being displaced from their own school, the football program held together under head coach Barry Campbell, and not only earned a trip to the Class 6A Division II playoffs, but won a pair of postseason games in the process.

The Mustangs won at NRG Stadium and advanced to the Region III semifinals last Saturday at TDECU Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. That’s where the final chapter of this inspiring story was written. The Mustangs fell, 51-16, to Langham Creek, snapping a four-game win streak. Kingwood finishes the highly challenging 2017 season with a record of 6-6. Langham Creek (11-1) will advance to play at Cy-Fair in a 1 p.m. Saturday region championship game.

The Lobos took control from the start, racing to a 27-0 lead at the quarter and 44-0 by halftime. Kingwood trailed 51-0 before scoring the final 16 points of the game. Quarterback Matt Slayton threw touchdown passes of 40 and 14 yards to Nolan Powell and Trey Gould respectively while kicker Connal Fisher added a 27-yard field goal.

Slayton completed 10 passes for 158 yards.

Kingwood senior offensive guard Chris Elam, a New Mexico commit, summed up the season well. On his Twitter account he posted: “First off I want to thank everybody who believed in us from the start and never lost faith even when times were bleak, you don’t know how much your support helped us. After my injury and when Hurricane Harvey took away our school and almost our football program, it taught me many life lessons about facing adversity head on and to never give up. The moments I shared with my teammates through this whole season will never be forgotten. Thank you to all of my coaches for pushing me to limits I never thought I would meet and for believing in me as the player I am. This season has been a wild and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thank you.”
