The Kingwood High School baseball team continued its torrid pace into District 21-6A play last week. The Mustangs won their district openers and improved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.

Masyn Winn struck out 11 over 6 1/3 innings of work as Kingwood rolled past Goose Creek Memorial, 7-2, in the district home opener on Friday.

Jake Byers highlighted the attack with a bases-loaded double, driving in three runs in a big, six-run, fifth-inning explosion. It was one of two hits of the night for Byers.

Carter Amarantos also delivered two hits for Kingwood and Tre Richardson also drove in a run.

The Mustangs opened district play on the road early last week, slipping past Atascocita, 3-2. Cody Lancaster got the win on the mound for the Mustangs, working the first 5 2/3 innings, while Winn picked up the save, striking out three.

Kingwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead and hung on, making good use of just four hits. A.J. Irvin had one of those as did Ben Cegelski, who doubled and drove in a run. Jacob Duane also provided the Mustangs with an RBI.

Kingwood is back in action this week with a pair of district games. The Mustangs host Channelview on Tuesday before visiting North Shore for a Friday game. Both league contests are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
