After another successful season which saw the Atascocita Eagles basketball team reach a regional tournament for a fourth straight year, the Eagles ran up against an obstacle that was simply too tough to overcome.
Despite senior Fabian White’s best efforts (he led all scorers with 23 points in his final game as an Eagle), it was not enough to overcome the depth of the Cypress Falls Golden Eagles.
They wore down Atascocita late and pulled away for a 55-45 victory last Friday night at the Berry Center in Cypress.
Early in the game, the Golden Eagles took control.
They led by nine points early, but thanks to White and key baskets by junior Kobe Wilson (he finished the game with 10 points), the Eagles took the lead in the second quarter and kept the game close at halftime, trailing just 26-24.
But, as the game wore on, Atascocita missed on key outside shots and the Golden Eagles wore down the Eagles with balanced scoring. Cy Falls led by six after three and pulled away in the fourth.
Nigel Hawkins led the way for the Golden Eagles with 19, but they put four players in double figures, compared to Atascocita’s two.
Cy Falls went on to beat Fort Bend Bush on Saturday and will now head into the state tournament in San Antonio this weekend.
As for the Eagles, they will now look to the 2017-18 season, where they will lose a key player but return most of the rest of their roster.
White, who was a key part of Atascocita’s run in recent years, will move on to play basketball at the University of Houston.
The Eagles also lose senior Kalon Winslow, but all the rest of the roster returns, which includes key players like Wilson, sophomore Joe Rollins, junior Devin Harrison and many others.
