The Kingwood High School boys' basketball team closed out the 2016-17 regular season with a victory on the road and now sets its sights on the playoffs.

Chase Lovins scored 10 points and Brandon Burrell hauled in 16 rebounds to help the Mustangs take care of Goose Creek Memorial, 38-31, early last week in the regular season finale. Matt Charles and Ubong Nwoko were also among the key contributors, scoring eight and seven points respectively.

The Mustangs enter the postseason on a three-game win streak and have won four of their last five games.

A 14-7 second-quarter run helped put distance between the Mustangs and their hosts last Tuesday. Kingwood led 24-15 at halftime and increased that to 34-24 after three quarters.

The victory sewed up second place for Kingwood, which closed the season at 21-10 overall and 10-4 in District 21-6A competition.

The Mustangs open the postseason on Tuesday in a bi-district playoff game with La Porte, the No. 3 seed from District 22-6A. The game tips off at 7 p.m. at Crosby High School.

The winner of that game moves on to the area round of the playoffs to face the winner of the game between District 24-6A champions Dickinson and District 23-6A fourth-seed Alief Elsik.
