Though they lost to eventual state champion Lake Travis in the Class 6A Division I state semifinals on Dec. 10, the Atascocita Eagles football team had a historic run which ended with the first appearance in the state football playoffs in the school’s history.
It was a run that, even though it fell short of a state title, garnered the Eagles many district and state honors…and not just on the football field, but in the classroom as well.
In all, eight Eagles received either an academic honorable mention or a second team nomination in the Texas High School Coaches’ Association’s All State Academic Team.
Senior Dawud Shorts and senior Alonzo Woods received honorable mention. Seniors Sammy Cosmi, Zach Eldred, David Heaton, Ethan Herold, Ethan Randecker and Joshua Van Dyke were named to the second team.
The Eagles also received an All-State nomination on the football field from the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors. Cosmi, a senior lineman, was named to the second team offensive unit.
And as expected, in 21-6A, the Eagles received numerous honors there.
First and foremost, the Eagles took home the newcomer, offensive and special teams MVP awards, as sophomore Kenyon Green and seniors Daveon Boyd and Heaton received those honors respectively.
The Eagles also had five players on the offensive first team; Shorts, Cosmi, junior Kendall Dearth and seniors Alerick Soularie and Lujuan Winningham.
Soularie also made the second team offense for his kick return abilities, as did senior Griffin Hammond.
The Eagles also had 10 defensive players named to the two all-district units; first teamers included sophomore Brighton Thompson, juniors Jaylon Allen, Payton Harden and Travian Blaylock, along with seniors Robert Amar and Justen Campbell.
Four more snagged second team honors; junior Daryion Taylor and seniors Tralan Hutchinson, Kendrix Burford and Josh Escobedo.
