Matt Charles scored 12 points to lead a trio of double-figure scores on Saturday as the Kingwood High School boys' basketball team earned a 47-38 non-district home victory over Spring.
Connor Gaines and Chase Lovins followed in the scoring column, each with 11 points.
The game remained close throughout the first half with the Mustangs taking a 9-8 lead at the quarter and a 17-15 edge by halftime. But it was a 19-9 run in the third quarter that broke open the contest.
Kingwood held off Klein, 36-35 on the road early last week. Brandon Burrell, who finished with a team-high 11 points, provided the clutch free throw with time winding down to make the difference.
Lovins also played a key role, scoring 10 points, and Charles was also among the standouts on offense. He scored eight points in the first half to help the Mustangs to a 20-18 lead, five of those came in the first quarter when Kingwood jumped out to a 13-10 advantage.
That lead was maintained through the third quarter. Kingwood took a 30-28 lead into the final period.
The Mustangs return to the court Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 26-27 when they host the Kingwood Holiday Classic.
