At 38 – 2, the Kingwood Mustangs boys basketball team was well on their way to a third straight regional championship. “This is our fifth year in a row at the regional championship,” said Assistant Coach Dominic Amorosa. Five seniors made up the starting lineup for the March 2 game. The Mustangs faced off against the Houston Madison team at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center on Aldine Bender. “We’ve got a pretty good group of guys,” said Amorosa. “We haven’t lost to a team in Texas yet this season.” From the opening buzzer, both teams gave it their all and scores ran ran neck and neck until the buzzer at halftime. Kingwood was ahead by one point at the break. The final score for the Kingwood win over Madison was 82-66. The Mustangs followed with another win against Clear Lake High School on Saturday, advancing the team to state. The final score in the Clear Lake game was 59-51. State semifinals will be played in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, and winners will play for the championship Saturday, March 10, at 8:30 p.m. Photo #1 Player number 21, Trevin Harris, puts the ball back into play at the district playoff game at Campbell Arena.
