The Kingwood Mustangs boys basketball team earned a pair of District 22-6A victories last week to keep pace in the hotly contested playoff race. The Mustangs opened the week with a 51-31 victory over South Houston on the road. Walker Blaine led a balanced attack with 15 points.

Summer Creek High School’s softball team is starting their new season off on a high note as sophomore Jeralsilca “Jay” Albiter was chosen for the USA Elite Select 30 High School All-American Team.

Atascocita: The No. 8 state-ranked Eagles improved to 7-1 in District 22-6A play and 23-4 overall with a hard-fought 45-42 victory over Kingwood at home on Friday.

Cameron Morrison and Tom Hart III led a late rally. The two combined for 11 points as the Eagles used a 14-5 run to end the game on the winning side. Hart finished with 13 points and Morrison added 12 more.

The Summer Creek Bulldogs and Atascocita Eagles, both ranked in the top 10 of 6A boys basketball by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, have been two of the most consistent teams in the state all year.

This week, they both picked up key wins, continuing on an impending collision course for a key matchup Feb. 4.

The Kingwood Mustangs tied a bow on the first round of District 22-6A play on Friday with a convincing 54-34 victory over Sam Rayburn at home.

Tommy Newman poured in 18 points and Walker Blaine added 13 more as the Mustangs kept pace with the top teams in the district, finishing the first round with a 6-2 district mark and a 16-8 record overall.
