Welcome back to Out and About … where you can find out what’s happening in our community. We continue to look back this week (and next) on some memorable events and those that are upcoming, as well as how we celebrated the end of 2009. FamilyTime’s Women of Achievement Award gala, Hearts of Gold, is Jan. 30 at the Houston Airport Marriott Hotel. Join in a beautiful evening of celebrating the achievements of 13 outstanding women in our community and benefiting FamilyTime’s Crisis and Counseling Center and The Door. Until 2003 Women of Achievement awards were presented at a luncheon. The galas began with the Silver Celebration of FamilyTime’s 25th anniversary which was held at the Nathaniel Center, and Bobbi McIntosh received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2009 gala was held at the Marriott, and Judy Whitehead Fowler received the award. The tradition of dancing the night away to the great sounds of Easy Money Band continues this year. Auction items include tickets to the Jonas Brothers performance at the rodeo and much more. Make your reservation now by calling FamilyTime at 281-446-2615 or e-mail Susan Meinholz at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Speaking of dancing the night away, you won’t want to miss “Dancing for Partners” on April 22 at the Humble Civic Center. Last year’s event was great fun and raised $23,000 for the Lake Houston YMCA Partners Scholarship Campaign. Looking a lot like Dancing with the Stars, some of last year’s celebrity dancers included Dr. Guy Sconzo, Dan Huberty, Robert Scarfo, Christie Harrison, Paul and Vicky Sarvadi. Rumor has it that the dazzling team of “Mike (Byers) and Mike (Sullivan)” will do an encore as emcees. Glen and Alice Rekeweg were honored as Senate District 4 Volunteers of the Year at the 2009 Republican Pioneer Awards and Christmas dinner held in the Nautilus Ballroom at the downtown Aquarium Restaurant. Making a special evening even more so, good friend Janet Huberty presented the award to Glen and Alice. Joe and Corinn Price hosted a New Year’s Eve open house. Friends and neighbors enjoyed the casual afternoon, Italian buffet, yummy desserts and great conversations. Faces in the crowd included Corinn’s parents David and Louise Cheney; Stephen and Jennifer Dantzler; Hugh and Rachel Miller; Ray and Karen Perkins Solcher; Randy and Carol Sutton; Stan and Leesa Love; Jeff and Laurie Hiett, Roger and Anne Schulke; Mark and Jerri Monbaron; Brent and Tara Colescott and precious baby Ainsley. It was wonderful to see Ed and Peggy Glazierout and about after several months of health problems that kept them homebound. The Glaziers were also sighted dining at Italiano’s earlier in the week. Robert and Susan Lunson hosted their 11th annual New Year’s party, and their second at Tour 18, a great party venue, with a dance floor, a deejay playing danceable music for all levels of dancers, and a delicious buffet. Among guests celebrating the night away: Todd and Lorie Miller; Richard and Meredith Hawley; Glen and Alice Rekeweg; Steve and Nancy Sandstrum; King and Jena Hardy; Sam and Carolyn Treynor; Richard and Bev Silloway; Barry and Lynda Rought; Henry and Debbie Lee; David and Pam Dean, visiting from Dallas. A highlight of the evening was the 10 p.m. salute and toast to all the branches of our military. Eileen Booher hosted the first of what will become an annual New Year’s celebration, with a traditional buffet of ham, black eyed peas, tamales, and all the trimmings, Karyn Brenza’s desserts, and champagne. Faces in the crowd: Howard Pitman; Cindy Brenza; Chris and Payton Parker; Christopher and Jill Curran; Dick and Carolyn Cain. Hostess with the mostess Cheryl (CJ) Johnson hosted her third annual New Year’s Eve party. Her beautiful home was overflowing with friends and family, including: daughter Annie, visiting from Washington DC; Marc and Anne McIlhany; Robert and Jayme Scarfo; Dan and Janet Huberty; Patrick and Susan Curling; Richard and Len Leofsky; Howard Pitman; Hector and Robin Martinez; Richard and Nancy Foisner; Wayne and Millie Garrison; Lupe and Josie Lopez; Miek Staats; Dave and Criss Daspit; Tim and Jo Daspit; Dan and Noreen McCarthy; Noreen’s parents Vermont State Representative Andy and Joan Donaghy; Dennis and Karen Pfeiffer; Andy and Marian Ferguson. Everyone’s favorite deejay Mark Linabury played our favorite music, and there was dancing. The evening came to an end around 3 a.m. when Daniel Ledoux and Mike Netek treated guests to a memorable, or maybe not, karaoke performance! I need at least 3 weeks’ advance notice to include a “before” mention, and need “who, what, where, when, why, cost, and contact” information. If you see me out and about, introduce yourself, and see your name in the column! I hope everyone has thawed out from last week― I’ll see you out and about!
