Welcome back to Out and About … where you can find out what’s happening in our community! It’s great to be back! I enjoyed a few weeks off, and now am looking forward to a wonderful fall season of luncheons, galas, golf tournaments, and much more; so stay tuned! Lone Star College-Kingwood recently hosted a presentation on the college and the community at a “We’re All Neighbors” luncheon. Guests gathered in the SFA building to enjoy a buffet salad luncheon and learn more about the wonderful programs and courses offered by the college. Lone Star president Dr. Katherine Persson was the keynote speaker and host of the event. Andrea White, wife of Houston’s Mayor Bill White, spoke on behalf of the mayor’s campaign theme of “We’re All Neighbors,” programs that include the environment, health care, education and the arts. No better place to kick it off in Kingwood than at Lone Star, where leaders in many of these categories gathered to participate: Lone Star’s: Elizabeth Chapman, Todd Miller, Jim Stubbs, Jon Connolly, and Robin Garrett; Councilman Michael Sullivan and Kim Sullivan; Mike Byers; Kingwood Medical Center Hospital CEO Melinda Stephenson; Memorial Hermann Northeast’s Tom Broad; Twila Carter; Kim Brusatori; Jill Curran; Sparky Nolan, and Danell Fields, who also provided the beautiful summer floral arrangements. Ron Denoville celebrated his 77th birthday with wife Tina and many friends at the lovely Crosby home on Lake Houston of daughter Diane Loughran and husband Jim. Among those gathered to wish Ron the best: Al and Jackie Russell; Stuart and Danielle Graham; Alan Osborne and Kathy LeCompte (her birthday was the next day); Paul Risch and fiancée Marlene Hawkinson, and many others. Ron formally invited everyone to return for his 100th birthday party, and all those in between! Tina and Ron continued the celebration two days later by traveling to Mexico for a quiet getaway. Diane Blanco celebrated her birthday at Amedeo’s, surrounded by many friends, and they celebrated in style! Great food, beverages, beautiful flowers, and special friendships filled the evening. Everyone agreed it was one of the best birthday parties they had ever attended, among them: Hildy Bubier, Pat Chandler, Devon Alexander, Mary Hubbard, Kathy Adkins, Vickie Stansifer, Laurie Passmore, Twila Carter, Debbie Esparza, Ronda Meuwissen, Jill Curran, Pam Clarke, Kay Fitzsimons and Danell Fields. Ron and Halene Crossman spent three weeks of their summer escaping the heat by taking a cruise to Norway. They journeyed to the northern most point at Ny Alesund, about 600 miles from the North Pole. They also visited the port at Murmansk, Russia, in the northern most part of the country. As soon as they returned, Halene got right to work on the upcoming Kingwood Area Republican Women’s Club (KARW) gala, celebrating 30 years in our community, and Literacy Awareness. The gala is Sept. 19 at Kingwood Country Club. Contact Halene at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for table sponsorships and reservations. In keeping with their commitment to literacy, KARW teamed up with Humble Intercontinental Rotary to purchase 576 dictionaries for needy fifth graders in HISD for the upcoming school year. Northeast Hospital Foundation is getting ready for their second annual “In the Pink of Health” luncheon on Oct. 16 at the Houston Airport Marriott Hotel. Last year’s luncheon with Ann Jillian was one of the best I have ever attended, so don’t wait to make your reservation! This year’s speaker will be Christine Clifford Beckwith, bestselling author and cancer survivor. Kingwood Women’s Club will be honored for their support of numerous community organizations, including Project Mammogram, Society of St. Stephen, Friends of the Library Kingwood, The Door, several area schools, and Lone Star College-Kingwood, just to name a few. Individual seating is available at $100, with table (for 10) sponsorships beginning at $1,000; with others available at $1,500, $3,000, $5,000 and $10,000. Event proceeds will target cancer programs, providing much-needed breakthroughs in technology and resources for Memorial Hermann Northeast cancer patients. Congratulations on these July anniversaries: Jon and Michelle Pohla (10th); Bryant and Chris Pearce (35th); Todd and Carol Sloane (40th); Tom and Mary Ann Wussow (40th); Jim and Barbara Williamson (57th). Two of our community’s “quiet heroes” are Rick and Dorothy Alspaugh. To celebrate the Fourth of July each year, the Alspaughs, assisted by many volunteers, host a barbecue and street dance, and 2009 was the 16th year! Just so you’ll know, on July 3, when it was 100 degrees outside at 8:00 p.m., these volunteers were getting the grills ready and settling in for a night of cooking: Rick; Robert Morrison; Max Chelf; Joe Ginty; Chris Cummins; Mike Price; Bob Schorr and his brother, David. Thank you, Rick, Dorothy and all the great volunteers who give back to the community and make this such a success each year! I’ll see you out and about!
