Red, white and blue and summer time, too! It’s hard to believe a year has passed and here I am again as an Out and About “guest writer.” What an honor! I started my week off at the monthly breakfast meeting for the North Harris County Criminal Justice Association. We had a delicious meal at Italiano’s with an awesome speaker, Sergeant Domingo Villarreal with the Humble Police Department. Other bright and cheerful folks in the crowd were Ray Anderson, Mike Byers, Council Member Adrian Garcia, who, by the way, is running for Harris County sheriff, Betty Hogan, Pete Hinojosa, Humble Police Chief Gary Warman, retired Chief Larry Shiflet, Captain Wally Weighat, Ray Taylor, Connie Savage, HPD Officer Dwayne Ulrich. Talk about a full breakfast club! If you want to be seen OUT AND ABOUT early in the morning, this is the crowd to be in. I know July 4th has come and gone, but I can’t help but mention how wonderful the festivities were this year. This was the largest parade Kingwood has ever had; Atascocita and Forest Cove were certainly rocking too. The parade participants and sponsors worked so hard I wanted to mention both in my column. All of this would not be possible without wonderful sponsors and I know we want to thank them for their support. Thank you HEB, Randall’s, Keller Williams, Fiesta Azteca Restaurant, Orange Business Services, Kings Crossing Car Care and LaPlant Surveyors. Let’s not forget about the Fishing Rodeo that was sponsored by Roy Rogers Discount Realty and of course the Bike Rodeo, which was sponsored by Tammy Heitzwebel. A special thanks goes out to Grant Smith, intern at Kingwood High, for managing all the traffic at the high school parking lot. A parade is not a parade without all the beautiful floats. Speaking as one of the Kingwood judges, let me tell you about our awesome winners: Family Spirit” went to MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), “Best Traditional”- Cub Scout Troop #3610, “Best Patriotic”-HEB, “Judges’ Choice” was awarded to Cub Scout Troop #3603 and “Best Original”- Cub Scout Troop #3664. Way to go everyone! Thank you again to our dignitaries for taking time out of their busy schedules, Councilman Mike Sullivan led the way, Congressman Ted Poe, State Representative Joe Crabb and HPD Chief Harold Hurtt was riding in style in the SWAT mobile. I was out at Los Cucos having dinner with friends and I happen to see a group of women all gathered together having what appeared to be an intense, but fun, conversation. To be truthful, they looked like they were having a bit more fun than me! I was really drawn to their table. I kept looking over at them trying to see if I knew anyone. I was so thrilled when I recognized the Haute Flash Contessa – Tribune columnist Danielle Schaaf was in the group. I decided to just invite myself over to find out what all the hoopla was about. To my surprise, this wonderful group of beautiful ladies were having their monthly book club. So here sat Danielle, Adela Holda, Debbie Sewell, Janet Golla, Donna Porter and Gina Ellis all having dinner, drinks and laughter discussing the book “The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night” by Mark Haddon. They were so much fun! I loved each of them and they made me feel so welcomed. Now, I don’t know if they were just being nice or what, but they actually let me draw for next month’s book and meeting place. So, here it is, all you avid readers-next month they are meeting at Pei Wei and will be discussing “Light On Snow” by Anita Shreve. They told me everyone is welcome and they always meet the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. What a great group of powerful, intelligent women. Great energy and lots of fun - thanks ladies, for enlightening me with terrific conversation! Happy Birthday RAFFA’s. One year ago, Tony and Leslie Raffa opened their doors to a beautiful new restaurant on the water and let our community experience something new and different at Kings Harbor! Wow, talk about a PARTY ON THE PATIO. Beautiful faces in the crowd included Judy Luquette, Dave Crawford, Adelle and Jack Gross, Dr. Bob Gross. Also present were Danny and Geralyn Sullivan – whose precious daughter Kelly is hostessing this summer at Amedeo’s, the Raffas other fabulous restaurant, Kevin Kelly, Debbie and Matt Brucha, John LiBerda, Gifford and Kerri Beuker, CJ Johnson, Denise Kreiger, Darla Quentel, Jan and John Lopeze, Dawn Morrell, Cheryl and Tony Austin, Doug Stanley, Martha VonGoten, Halene and Ron Crossman. The Tribune table was jumping! Tons of friends stopped by to say how much they love this great paper that serves the community so well – and, by the way, is the only locally-owned newspaper in our area. Tribune superstars enjoying the evening were Pam and David Dickson, Tim and Dawn Lange, Janet Huberty, Debbie Marvin, Rachael Waite and Karen Boughton! Cynthia and Larry Shiflet would have been there too but daughter Olivia Calvert had just arrived home from college. Raffa’s was really the place to be with red and white balloons through out and delicious food being served by Chef David and Tony. There were drink specials all night long and music on the patio provided by Mark Linabury with Kingwood Now. It was so much fun and the weather was perfect. Happy Anniversary to Danny and Geralyn Sullivan, 18 years! Pam Dickson is on vacation.
