Welcome back to Out and About … where you can find out what’s happening in our community! Did someone say volunteer? Humble Mayor Donnie McMannes made it a point to shout the word! Along with Memorial Hermann Northeast and Humble City Council, he hosted a “Senior Appreciation Luncheon” to thank some of our most dedicated volunteers from the Humble Area Activity Center. Nancy Clark was honored as volunteer instructor of ballroom dancing. Jack McFarland got the nod for teaching the seniors how to clog. Chere Shanks and Georgia Worthington were honored for their volunteer work with the Friday Fun & Games program. Julia Pearce, Carol West and Anna Felts got the honor for helping to set up and run the Ladies Pot Luck Luncheon (yum!) and Bill Reavis got a special nod from Activities Coordinator Carolyn Coats for his work with the newsletter calendar. It all sounds like so much fun and I bet with my gray hair I would fit right in! Hmmm…anyone want to join me? But seriously you guys, heartfelt thanks to all these dedicated individuals who enrich so many lives each day! Lonestar College-Kingwood’s own Todd Miller is quite a guy! Get this … he took a brief sabbatical and put together a European tour for 2009 of musically important cities. Todd reports that he will be taking a group of music lovers (and I am assuming that he is definitely not talking about Mowtown!) to Venice, Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague in May of 2009! Planning has already commenced so pay attention. There will be an informational, no obligation meeting on Monday, June 2, at 7 p.m. in SFA 107 (black box theater) on the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus. He will go over the scope of the tour, and Nick Atkinson, Vice President of Encore Tours, will present a slide show and provide information regarding the tour, tour cost, trip insurance, etc. FYI – for those of you who do not know Todd, he is amazing! Currently the Professor of Music/Lead Faculty for the college, he has conducted the LSCK Chamber Singers, produced and directed the Summer Opera Workshop and is Artistic Director and Conductor for the Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra! Doesn’t it just exhaust you to even read all of that, much less do all of that! This in from our own Kathy Larson - Sheryl Rowland is at it again! The dynamic Kingwood Dance Theatre, under Sheryl’s direction, is the only civic pre-professional ballet company in the area and has once again been invited to perform with the Young! Tanzsommer European tour. The company will perform their contemporary repertoire before audiences of thousands in Austria this summer. Choreographers of pieces which will be performed include Thom Clower, Joe Istre, Susan Cilie and Catherine Cogliangro, The Company is led by senior members Katharine Larson, Eric Vaughn, Melissa Chen and Lynni Long. Also performing will be Diana Drummond, Hannah Larson, Melissa Boice, Sarah Bowdoin, Katelyn Gresko, Alexandra Harvey, Lydia Marbach and HSPVA guest dancer, Kaylee Tang. Besides performing in various locations in the Alps of Austria, the group will participate in day tours to Venice, Italy, and Oberammergau, Germany. Perhaps we should have Todd Miller choreograph some music for the tour! The Humble Civic Center – trust me on this one – was not the place to be last week if you were up to no good! The joint was packed to the gills with police, fire and EMS from Houston, Humble, Pct. 4, Harris County, Atascocita and Lonestar College! Oh my gosh you guys - you cannot imagine how it feels to be in a room with that many uniforms and guns! Our own Gay Nord MC’d this amazing Appreciation Luncheon and didn’t seem intimidated at all. I think I will call her Wonder Woman! Mike Byers, Humble Area Chamber President, presented a token of appreciation to recently retired Larry Shiflet and all of them were bantering back and forth about who will be wearing “the hat” after the next golf game! I have since found out that “the hat” is worn by the loser but could not (and believe me I tried) get a description of this mysterious item! Oh well – I am sure that worked out for the best! Those present, who feasted on a divine lunch from Los Cucos, included Leon Brashier, Mike Byers II, Cezar Gonzales, Mike Sullivan, Tom Broad, Jess Fields, Marilyn Gerry, Barbara Byers, Cynthia Calvert (Trib owner and wife of Larry Shiflet – I bet she knows what “the hat” is), Pastor Jerry Martin, Kim Brode, Andie Szabo, Carl Joiner, and many more! Seen Out and About: Jimmy and Mary Byrd boarding a plane to jet off for their anniversary, Miss Espie on Kingwood Drive, Judy Luquette and Nancy Shortsleeve at Hasta La Pasta, Frances Andrews, Devon Alexander and yours truly at Los Cucos (their tableside guacamole is to die for!), Donna Barrett at Stacy’s Dance Recital. It has been kinda quiet the last couple of weeks! Everyone is eagerly anticipating the close of school and our official beginning of summer. Keep checking in the coming weeks for wet news about pool parties and adventurous trips from our community! Pam should be rolling in from her trip soon and I am sure she is looking forward to getting back in the groove! I’ll see You Out and About!
