Welcome back to Out and About … where you can find out what’s happening in our community! No place else but Texas – it was “Boots & Bling” – the second annual Including Kids Gala at Kingwood Country Club. This gala was outstanding in many ways – the beautiful red silk table décor, the amazing live and silent auctions, a raffle, a casino, dancing and a crowd that was gung ho for supporting the work of Including Kids, an organization that provides special programs for children with Autism. Decked out in cowboy boots and tuxes, cocktail dresses and lots of sparkle, this crowd really got into the live auction, paying $15,000 for an autographed George Strait guitar and $10,000 for a crawfish boil for 50 close friends! The dinner menu was some very good barbecue, but guests could pre-order a fish entrée if they preferred – great idea! Among those at this elegant “hoe-down”: Tony and Marilyn Crossley; Bill and Suzanne Deubner; David and Ruth Thornhill; Steve and Lisa Prusak; Robert and Susan Lunson; Phil Cowan; Roger Bethune; Stephen Dantzler; Evelyn Walters; Bill and Joyce Locher; Chuck and Elizabeth Sledge; Jim and Helen Dillier; Gary and Lisa Sostack; Bob and Candy Lawless; Joe and Gabrielle Sausnock; Bill and Jennifer Hunter. Kudos to Jennifer Dantzler, Theresa Johnston, teachers, and many hard working volunteers! The second annual Zach Jones Golf Tournament and fundraiser were held at Walden Country Club. The Club was beautifully decorated in an elegant jungle motif, and the walls of any and every open space were lined with an amazing array of silent auction items. Through this golf tournament and dinner, Larry and Connie Jones have donated more than $30,000 to area graduating seniors for scholarships, in remembrance of their son Zach, who died after being bitten by a rabid bat. This year would have been Zach’s graduation from Atascocita High School; so Larry and Connie, an inspiration to us all, included a $5,000 gift to AHS Project Graduation, in honor of Zach. This is such a spirit-filled event, with those who knew and loved Zach, as well as caring people across the country, showing support for this special young man who touched so many hearts. Sharing the evening: Harold and Courtney Low; John and Michelle Edgar; Dr. Manfred and Daira Quentel; Mike and Teresa Maharaj; Dan and Janet Huberty; Larry and Cynthia Shiflet; Laura LeBlanc; Stacy Ward; Susan Brown; Carol Bodin. Did you know that April 21 was Martha Martinez Day in Humble? Mayor Donnie McMannes thought that we should recognize this surgical tech at Memorial Hermann Northeast. She recently saved an unconscious man from a burning car, just seconds before it exploded! Northeast campus CEO Louis Smith and Gloria Tobin, Chief Patient Care Officer, personally delivered flowers to Martha, and Memorial Hermann CEO Dan Wolterman sent her a congratulatory letter. We’re proud of you, Martha! Was it “Key West Kingwood” or “California Kingwood”? Neither one; it was Raffa’s Party on the Patio! Mark Linabury was spinning our favorite music, Tony and Leslie were serving wine, and the breeze was fantastic. Among those enjoying a perfect spring evening: Christopher Curran and Jill Bagley; Dave and Gwendolyn Crawford; Danny and Geralyn Sullivan; Stacie Thomas; Marta Marsha; Robert Scarfo; Ann-Marie Pires; Cheryl Johnson; Bailey Dixon; Paul and Denise Krieger. I might also have noticed some new “friendships” developing that night, but of course, I won’t mention any names. On a sad note, though, Jim and Pascale McIver confirmed that they are moving (with Jack and Tommy) to Newport Beach, CA in just a couple of months. Since none of us want to miss the McIvers’ annual Christmas party, we’re making reservations now! It wouldn’t be spring without Tony and Leslie Raffa’s annual Linguini Invitational; their way of saying thanks to their loyal patrons. This was the 19th―can you believe it – and the first time that Tony has ever been in the winning foursome, along with Mike Corder; Pat Weston; Allen Riley. Other ace golfers included: Phil Garner; Larry Shryock; Lupe Lopez; John Sorrentino, Mike Lawler; Larry Shiflet. Following the tournament on Kingwood Country Club’s Marsh Course, about 150 people feasted on shrimp, prime rib, all the sides and trimmings, and fantastic desserts at Amedeo’s. The committee from American Heart Association Go Red for Women (GRFW) Luncheon celebrated this year’s very successful luncheon and began planning for 2009. Lindsey Mulholland reported net revenues of over $77,000, including more than $12,000 for the “purse-onality” auction! A tentative date for the 2009 GRFW luncheon is Friday, May 1. Kingwood Medical Center and Lake Houston YMCA have already signed on as sponsors! Happy Sweet 16 to Elizabeth Flake, who celebrated at Kingwood Country Club with parents Joe and Leslie, brother Alex, and 80 of her nearest and dearest friends. If you haven’t bought your tickets or table for Constable Ron Hickman’s Lyle Lovett concert on Friday, May 16, at Humble Civic Center, you need to do that RIGHT NOW!
