The Kingwood Big Band will host a jazz festival March 7, which will include a workshop and jazz performance with New York City-based trumpeter Scott Wendholt.

The band, under the direction of Alfredo Vélez, will perform music from Villiage Vanguar Orchestra in New York. Prior to the concert, Wendholt will lead a jazz workshop which is free to the public.

”Our audience should expect a wonderful jazz experience with a talented trumpet player not usually heard in the Houston area,” Vélez said. “We will also feature many of the band’s talented soloists that are among the leading musicians in Houston.”

Wendholt, a veteran originally from Denver, has recorded and/or worked extensively with artists including Kenny Garrett, Cyrus Chestnut, Christian McBride, Don Braden and Bruce Barth. For the past six years, Wendholt has found a home with Vincent Herring’s quintet in NYC.

Formed in 2004, The Kingwood Big Band is part of the Lake Houston Musical Arts Society. The 18-piece big band is comprised of community members and professors, as well as numerous music teachers and musicians from the north part of Houston. The band plays jazz standards from the big band era through today’s contemporary music from leading, worldwide jazz composers.

Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and senior citizens age 55 and older. Tickets are available online or at the door.
