Somewhere over the rainbow The Kingwood Area Quilt Guild is kicking it up a notch with preparations for their biennial quilt show, “Peacemakers of the Heart.” This event will be held May 1-2 at the Humble Civic Center, 8233 Will Clayton Parkway. Admission is $5 per day for adults, $3 per day for seniors and children under 12 are admitted at no charge. More than 300 quilts will be on display, set in vignettes to showcase the quilts. There will be a number of vendor booths, special exhibits and door prizes, as well as a guild-sponsored boutique featuring hand-crafted items, quilt appraisals by AQS Certified Appraiser Cindy Brick and a silent auction of miniature quilts. In addition, guests can take a chance at winning a donation quilt. “Over the Rainbow” is valued at more than $1,000. Tickets for the raffle are $1, or six for $5. “This is our biggest project, a quilt show, that we do every two years at the Humble Civic Center,” said Margery Hedges, publicity chairwoman. “We usually have several thousand people come to this event.” The Kingwood Are Quilt Guild has been a part of Kingwood’s history for more than 30 years. The guild sponsors a biennial quilt show in odd-numbered years and a quilt auction in even-numbered years. The guild is a nonprofit organization and has participated in a number of local events over the years such as the Montgomery County Fair, the Kingwood Art Show, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Jesse Jones Park Pioneer and Heritage Days and the Houston International Quilt Festival. The guild donates books to local school libraries about the history of quilting and contributes to a scholarship with the Lone Star College District, providing support for art students.
