BARC, the City of Houston’s Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, is excited to offer a community event to provide free preventive wellness options, including microchipping, for Houston pet parents that have been impacted by COVID-19.

In alignment with BARC’s proactive measures combating the spread of distemper in the City’s shelter, this event will provide routine vaccines — including one to combat distemper — to those impacted by the pandemic. Distemper is an ever-present yet treatable virus.

“As distemper continues to affect the Houston-area dog population, BARC has found a proactive way to help those impacted by COVID-19 keep their pets safe and well,” said City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.” We are happy that we can provide services and supplies for Houston pet parents that have faced challenges as a result of COVID-19. We will continue to work with local animal rescue and wellness partners to keep families and their pets together during this difficult time.”

Located at 3200 Carr St., BARC’s Wellness Center will host the free preventive wellness event from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 13.

While supplies last, online appointments for services will be available to city of Houston residents by visiting: www.houstontx.gov/barc/wellnesscenter.html.

BARC’s low-cost Wellness Center is now open by appointment only. The Wellness Center offers low-cost vaccines, microchips, dewormer and heart worm & flea prevention for both dogs and cats. Learn more about pricing and everything BARC offers:

One of the most powerful things that Houstonians can do is to foster a shelter pet. BARC is always actively recruiting fosters to help the pets that come into the shelter daily. Whether it is a short-term foster for a pet that will be transported or a long-term foster for a pet that needs the extended care, we need your help. We can’t control the number of animals coming into BARC, but you can help us control the number that make it into loving homes. You can help us give these animals a chance. Please visit www.houstontx.gov/barc/foster_a_pet.html if you are interested in becoming a foster parent today.
