Q: What can I do for my favorite gardener this holiday season?
A: Gardening, working in the soil, and seeing plants grow is such a fulfilling activity for so many folks and here are a few ways to support your favorite gardener.
Visit Mercer Botanic Gardens as fall and winter are fabulous for outdoor visits and pick up a membership to The Mercer Society for extra benefits during events at this free local park.
Downtown visit the Houston Botanic Garden featuring a light show this holiday time. Wander in Memorial Park and the Houston Arboretum. Just outside the area near Hempstead, support Peckerwood Garden, which has been renamed John Fairey Garden to honor the garden’s creator, an amazing plantsman who sadly left us last year.
Or join and visit gardens further afield like the Wildflower Center in Austin, San Antonio Botanical Garden, Fort Worth Botanic Garden/Botanical Research Institute of Texas, Dallas Arboretum, Pineywoods Native Plant Center or Ruby Mize Azalea Garden, both a short trip away in Nacogdoches.
Then there are conservation groups that further the protection of endangered plant species and habitats: Mercer Botanical Center and their affiliation with the national Center for Plant Conservation, Native Plant Society of Texas chapters, Texas Master Naturalists, The Nature Conservancy, Katy Prairie, Bayou Land Conservancy…the list of amazing groups is very long.
Plants from a local nursery will always enthrall your favorite gardener, and hopefully in your family, at holiday times and always, gardening is enjoyed by you all!
