Deputy Chris Gaines of Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman's office was recently presented the Star of Texas Award by Gov. Greg Abbott at the State Capitol in Austin. This award honors Texas peace officers and first responders who were either critically injured or killed in the line of duty.
In 2018, Gaines responded to a call for service pertaining to an individual who was threatening to harm himself. He arrived on scene with other deputies and attempted to make contact with the male who was inside the home. After several attempts to make contact, Gaines returned to his patrol vehicle to confirm the address and obtain additional information. At that time the male exited the residence and began shooting at the deputies.
Gaines was struck in his lower extremities by gunfire from the suspect. He underwent numerous surgeries and physical therapy over the course of several months. He has returned to duty and continues to serve and protect the citizens of Precinct 4.
