Humble ISD employs 200 to 300 guest teachers each day. “Guest teacher” is a term that is used synonymously with sub or substitute teacher.
A guest teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
Due to higher-than-normal teacher absences for a variety of reasons, and an ongoing commitment to continue providing quality education in the classroom for the students, the Humble ISD board of trustees discussed guest teacher pay during the June and September 2021 board meetings.
At the September meeting, the board voted to raise guest teacher pay for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year. The three primary daily rates for guest teachers were raised to the following pay schedule: $80 for guest teachers having 60-plus college hours, $90 for guest teachers holding a bachelor’s degree and $100 for those who are certified teachers. Previously the pay rates were $75, $85 and $95, respectively.
In addition, the board approved a temporary pay increase to include an additional $40 a day through the end of October and recently extended the increase through December.
“To remain competitive among the other surrounding districts, our board of trustees took a proactive approach and made Humble ISD a more attractive place to guest teach. When the school year started, we had some issues, but since the board acted in approving temporary pay increases and word got out, our fill rate increased significantly,” said Rick Gardner, associate superintendent of Human Resources.
