Summer Creek High School Head Track and Field and Cross Country Coach Shelton Ervin was selected as the 2021 National Boys and Girls High School Track and Field Coach of the Year. He’s the third Texas coach in history to receive the honor.Shelton

Ervin was selected by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association out of a field of 47 applicants.

Ervin has won two state titles while coaching at Summer Creek since the school opened in 2009. He earned his most recent state title in May 2021, the first title as a Class 6A team.

“I’m fired up because all three of my assistant coaches were able to directly coach a state champion in their event areas this year,” Ervin said.

When it comes to leading a winning team, Ervin doesn’t take all the credit.

“Coach Ervin presented at Texas High School Coaches Association this summer on track and field and never mentioned himself,” Troy Kite, Executive Director for Humble ISD UIL Athletics/Fine Arts, said. “He talked about his coaches and the teamwork, which says a lot about his character.”

Kite and the Humble ISD Board of Trustees honored Ervin for his achievement during the September Board meeting.

“Winning the state championship twice puts Coach Ervin in the top one percent of all coaches,” Kite said. “We are blessed to have him in our district.”

Upon winning his second state title, Ervin credits the fundamentals that he’s taught his team. He also says winning isn’t just for team recognition.

“I preach ‘Control the controllables,’” Ervin said. “Ultimately, the kids did it for their community, because we are proud to be from here.”

Prior to Summer Creek, Ervin coached multiple sports at Atascocita High School. He’s been coaching in Humble ISD since 2006. Prior to that, he was a member of the University of Houston Track and Field coaching staff.
