On April 10, the Humble ISD Middle School Battle of the Books competition was held at Atascocita Middle School. In its third year, almost all of the middle schools were represented and demonstrated their knowledge of the books they have read.
Last April, Lesley Nickelson, Riverwood librarian, Brooke King, Atascocita librarian, Alisa Cancino, Creekwood librarian, Harris County Kingwood Branch public librarian Lauren Richards and Harris County Atascocita public librarian Darla Pruitt, met to select the 15 books for students to read before the competition. They chose books based on popularity, diversity and literary quality.
Students began reading in October 2020. Each campus formed teams that would meet over the next few months to ultimately compete in a campus-based competition culminating in the top two teams from each school attending the final competition April 10.
This year, 11 teams competed for the championship. It came down to the three team members from the “Expecto Patronum” of AMS vs. the six-member “Defeater Readers” team of RMS.
In the end, the Defeater Readers, comprised of 8th graders who took home the trophy the first year, rocked it again. The Battle of the Book competition is up for grabs next year as these students will be moving on to high school. Congratulations to all of the students who competed. This is such a fun event for book lovers.
Not only was there an award for knowing your books, but the judges also awarded prizes for best team name to “Book Anomaly” from Atascocita MS, best team sportsmanship to the “Page Professionals” of Creekwood MS, best team costume to the “British Bookworms” of Riverwood MS, and best team spirit to “The Book Queens” of Timberwood MS. Every student left with a goody bag filled with books, bookmarks and pencils. Thanks to Permabound, Follett and Overdrive, first and second place winners received vouchers to purchase books for their libraries. All look forward to next year's competition as leaders plan to add elementary campuses in Humble ISD to this amazing celebration of reading.
