Following a voter-approved bond referendum that occurred in 2018, the new Lakeland Elementary School will finally open its doors to students in August for the 2021-2022 school year.

The campus is located at 1101 Rustic Timbers Drive, and it is situated in proximity to Ross Sterling Middle School as well as Humble High School.

“The new school will feature a series of learning pods that include airplane, arctic, dinosaur, marine, space, world traveler, and zoo themes. These allow children to explore, create, and collaborate. Rebuilding and relocating the school is less costly and faster and the new location also offers the advantage of more efficient traffic flow,” said Christopher Guillory, news and information specialist for Humble ISD.

According to Guillory, “the new Lakeland Elementary campus construction efforts cost approximately $30 million to build and the new campus is designed to serve 950 students. The former Lakeland campus, which operated for 60 years, was designed for a mere 850 students.” Prior to the construction, the school was not housing the maximum number of students possible.

One of the biggest benefits of the new construction is the exposure that the new campus will give students in terms of learning fine arts, which are valued by the administration.

Lakeland Elementary is home to the district’s first fine arts wheel. The program, which began in the 2019 – 2020 school year, provides students with the opportunity to experience orchestra, band, theater, choir, mariachi and dance in elementary school.

“The fine arts wheel has had a tremendous impact at Lakeland, and we look forward to the possibilities that our new learning space will offer to the program,” said Lucy Anderson, principle of Lakeland Elementary. This echoes one of the original goals of the construction efforts, which was to provide students with two years of fine arts experience in preparation for middle and high school programs.

“The fine arts wheel expanded to North Belt Elementary for the 2020 – 2021 school year,” added Guillory.
