In mid-December, Ken Kirchhofer, who is the general manager of the Atascocita Golf Club, suffered a devastating spinal injury that resulted in cervical spine surgery, leaving Kirchhofer immobilized from the waist down.
To make matters worse, Kirchhofer does not have health insurance. According to his GoFundMe page, this lack of insurance is common in the golf industry; the Atascocita Golf Club does not supply health insurance for its employees. Without health insurance, Kirchhofer and his family have been subjected to a variety of expenses, including rehabilitation, physical therapy, the ER, etc.
Amidst these circumstances, Kirchhofer received an outpouring of support from the local community. A GoFundMe page was set up in his name, describing the urgency of Kirchhofer’s situation. As of Jan. 6, the account has raised nearly $90,000 out of its original $100,000 goal.

Following his successful surgery, Kirchhofer’s daughter Brooke posted an inspiring video of her father on Facebook, where he thanked the community for their support and described his gratitude. He said, “I am OK … my spinal cord has rebounded … I cannot yet use my hands or walk, but it is OK - I am right where God wants me. I will be walking out of here [regardless of how long it takes].” He concluded by thanking everyone who has supported both him and his family.
The efforts to assist Kirchhofer did not end with the GoFundMe page.
Cynthia Calvert, Tribune owner, and Gwendolyn Crawford have partnered in creating a golf tournament as well as a silent auction to further raise funds to support Kirchhofer.
The pair is hosting the golf tournament/silent auction Jan. 22, which will take place at the Atascocita Golf Club at 11 a.m., shotgun start. Raffle tickets will be on sale during the tournament and the event will feature a “shot for a million” event, whereby players can buy a $5 raffle ticket for a hole-in-one shot award of $1 million. Players will each have two shots. The day’s events will conclude with a benefit concert afterwards at On the Rox Atascocita.
“Ken is such a great guy and everyone who knows him feels this way. He always helps those who need something, and he has done so much for so many. Now Ken needs the community’s help. Please consider participating in the golf tournament, purchasing a hole sign, or donating to the silent auction. It will take all of us to lift Ken, his wife Ruthie and his family up,” said Crawford.
“I have known Ken for several years. He has the heart of the community during this time and he has always taken care of those who came to him with concerns or needs. I hope every Tribune reader considers contributing to the Go Fund Me page or to the tournament,” said Calvert.
Donations to the Kirchhofer family will also be accepted at the pro shop.
