For the fourth straight season, the Atascocita Eagles football team entered the regional semifinals, which earned them a matchup with Cy-Fair Saturday at NRG Stadium.
Early on, the game looked like it might get out of hand. The Bobcats scored on the first play from scrimmage, and added two more touchdowns in the first quarter to make the score 21-0.After a valiant comeback effort which saw them wipe away a 21-point deficit, the Eagles saw their season come to an end, as the Bobcats prevailed 41-38 to advance to the regional finals against North Shore this coming week.
Then, the Eagles went to work and chopped away at the lead.
They got on the board early in the second quarter on a 33-yard touchdown from Brice Matthews to Dylan Robinson; then, after a Tristan Heaton field goal made the score 21-10, Matthews hooked up with Robinson for another touchdown to make the score 21-17 at half.
In the third, the teams scored one touchdown each, with Atascocita’s coming on a Matthews touchdown run. Cy-Fair added a 45-yard field goal to make the score 31-24 after three.
Early in the fourth, the Eagles finally erased the 21 point deficit, as TJ Thomas’ two yard touchdown run tied the game at 31 with 8:21 left.
However, just moments later, Cy-Fair’s LJ Johnson busted loose, scoring on a 67-yard touchdown run just a minute and a half later. This score gave the Bobcats the lead back, 38-31 with 6:51 left.
A Matthews interception after that set up the Bobcats to kick a field goal to go up by 10. Then, the Eagles put together a drive which ended in another Matthews to Robinson touchdown pass. That made the score 41-38.
But, Atascocita was unable to recover the onside kick, which sealed the win for Cy-Fair.
The Eagles finish the year 11-2, with both defeats coming by three points.
