The Kingwood Park Lady Panthers volleyball team captured their first Class 5A State Championship with a 3-0 sweep of Lucas Lovejoy in the finals on Nov. 17 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The Lady Panthers completed a 40-win season (40-11) in impressive fashion, taking down the six-time state champion by scores of 27-25, 25-22, 25-22 to earn their first state title.

“It feels pretty surreal,” said head volleyball coach Kelly Miser, in her third season as head coach.

“It’s an amazing feeling. There are really no words to describe how proud I am of this group. They just really are selfless and put each other before themselves. I really think the team aspect of this special group is what carried us all the way through.”

Elizabeth Overmyer had a team-high 15 kills and six service aces to go along with five digs. The junior led a trio of Kingwood Park players named to the State All-Tournament Team. Seniors Katey Searcy and Andie Unwin also earned recognition.

Searcy turned in nine digs, five assists and three kills in the state finals while Unwin had team highs in assists (19) and digs (12), tying the output of teammate Yates Barker, who also had 12 digs to go along with six kills.

Erika Williams contributed with nine kills and Alia Williams added seven more. Julia Hadley handed out 15 assists, and Emma Joy Omenson piled up five digs.

It was an impressive finish to be sure after the Lady Panthers squeezed past Canyon Randall in a grueling five-set state semifinals match. Kingwood Park rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before rallying to tie the match at 2-2 then winning the deciding game, 15-12.
