The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) has activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to monitor and prepare for tropical weather impacts to our region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting the redevelopment of Tropical Storm Harvey in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Harvey could potentially make landfall as a tropical storm or hurricane along the Texas Coast late Friday. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are possible through the weekend. In addition, forecasters expect storm surge and tropical storm or hurricane-force winds along the Texas coast.
HCOHSEM urges residents to review their family emergency plans, restock their disaster supply kits and stay informed.
Supply kit should include:
- NOAA weather radio and batteries
- Flashlight and batteries
- Extra eye glasses
- Bottled water
- Non-perishable food
- Clothing and bedding
- First aid kit, medications and prescriptions
- Special products for babies, elderly and medically fragile family members
- Cash and credit cards
- Photo ID, important documents and records
Also prepare an emergency kit for your pets and a plan on how to care for them. Never leave your pets behind!
If you live in an evacuation zone, an area threatened by storm surge, discuss evacuation plans with your family and do not stay if you are asked to leave. Check with city or county officials to find out if your home is in an evacuation zone or look on the Zip Zone Evacuation Map to see if your zip code is in an evacuation area. If you don’t live in an evacuation zone, shelter at home, until the storm passes. No evacuations have been ordered at this time.
In the event a Flash Flood Warning is issued, residents should seek higher ground, and avoid low-lying areas, such as bayous, creeks and streams, as well as freeway underpasses and low-lying streets. If you cannot see the road, the water is too high for you to drive through - Turn Around, Don't Drown®.
