Driving through Humble, on First Street, also known as Business FM 1960, Humble drivers are noticing many changes being made in the roadway.
The renovation of Business FM 1960 is being undertaken by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and the first phase is now close to completion. The cost of this phase is $13 million. The funding is entirely from the highway department with no local match.
Danny Perez, TxDOT public information officer, says the work on Business 1960 “includes widening the road and improving the surface of the road. Six intersections will be improved and five will have new signals installed. Curbs will be placed throughout the project. Drainage and storm sewers have been updated. There will be a sidewalk that spans the length of the project on either one or both sides, dependent on space.”
Perez also said that “the main purpose for this project is to improve the roadway. Adding the turning lane and the better roadway will allow for the main FM 1960 traffic to flow easier. This project also allows for enhanced safety.”
Following the work on Business 1960, the state will move to renovating the main FM 1960 with bid-letting scheduled for March 2019. Perez said, “This project is estimated to cost $90 million and will take 24 to 36 months to complete.”
Perez described the scope of the work on FM 1960, which will include “widening the existing four-lane, undivided roadway to a six-lane, divided highway. The project will also include curbs and gutters, five-foot sidewalks along both sides, and a shared use lane for bicycles. In addition there will be a new storm drain system and bridge overpasses.”
