Many new stores coming to district Mud 132 met at the Atascocita Country Club on May 17 and heard about some new developments in the district. Amy Zapletal, of Brown & Gay Engineers Inc., the district's engineering firm, reported that she had received requests for service from Target, Kohl's, Ross Dress for Less and Michael's, as well as yet another bank. All of the businesses will be going in at the Atascocita Commons development on FM 1960, where Palais Royal, PETCO and numerous other businesses are already in operation. The addition of the new stores will yield a substantial increase in the tax dollars received by the district per their Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) with the City of Houston. The district and the city split the revenue from a one-cent sales tax increase that went into effect in July of 2005. It is part of an agreement by the city not to annex residential properties in return for the annexation of the district's commercial properties. The district has budgeted, in the budget adopted at the meeting, for $900,000 in SPA revenue for the next fiscal year. They also budgeted $500,000 in the Debt Service Reserve and $750,000 in the Operating Reserve. Zapletal reported that the generators for the water plant and lift stations were up and running. They were recently installed in the event of a power outage. In other business, the board approved the renewal of the bookkeeper's contract, Myrtle Cruz Inc. They also discussed issues with drainage at Kings River Estates. Ray Hughes, board president, said that residents should write or call Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jerry Eversole's office so that they could do their part, digging ditches. The board agreed that the district would meet their responsibility where needed. “What I am looking forward to is cutting the taxes again next year,” said Hughes. MUD 132 meets on the third Thursday of the month at the Atascocita Library. They will meet at the Atascocita Country Club in June, July and August. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. The June meeting date may be changed due to conflicts with some of the members' schedules, as some will be attending a water district conference.
