The best and most convenient place to park for travelers flying from the airport is often the most expensive. That’s why George Bush Intercontinental Airport is now offering covered parking at the airport’s official on-airport economy lot, Parking Cents. Parking Cents, the only remote parking service offered by IAH, now offers travelers discount parking options with the satisfaction of knowing that their vehicle is sheltered from the elements during their time away. “It has been a great success with our customers,” said Chandra Felder, parking manager for the Houston Airport System, commercial development and airline affairs division. “We have 8,000 parking spaces at Parking Cents, 920 of which are now covered.” Felder said that the new accommodation has been so popular with customers that HAS expects to cover 1,000 additional spaces during the next 18– 24 months. Construction began in early May, when crews started installing welded steel frames with sheet metal roofing along the southwest corner of the Parking Cents facility. The work was performed while the rest of the lot remained in full operation and opened for business in early July. “Airport parking is a very fluid and dynamic part of the overall operation,” said Walt Gray, general manager of New South Parking. “You’re constantly evaluating the supply and demand, and you’re constantly looking for new options to bring to your customers.” The upgrade at Parking Cents represents the latest step in an overall program designed around expanding the amount of parking choices at IAH. The program includes the construction of the Terminal A/B garage, which added 5,600 spaces, and the Terminal E garage, which brought an additional 2,500 spaces to the airport. “We are always seeking new opportunities to offer new accommodations and amenities to our customers,” said Felder. “We want people to enjoy using Bush Intercontinental Airport and we are working hard to make getting to and from the terminals, as efficient, cost effective and customer friendly as possible.” Passengers can enjoy the covered parking option for a discount rate of $6 per day, while a special promotional offer is also lowering the rate for uncovered parking to $5 per day. The special offers will run at least through Aug. 31. Parking Cents is a remote parking service which utilizes the airport’s largest fleet of shuttle buses to carry passengers to all five terminals.
