Legal permanent residents interested in becoming a United States citizen are invited to attend the fifth annual Immigration and Citizenship Workshop at Lone Star College-Kingwood on Aug. 23 from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
This workshop is coordinated through a partnership with the college and the City of Houston’s Office of International Communities (OIC), Department of Neighborhoods; Neighborhood Centers Inc. (NCI), and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund.
“These forums connect the community to important resources that will lead them to the path of citizenship and can provide significant social, economic and civic benefits participation,” said Marisol Valero, immigration program manager for Neighborhood Centers Inc.
At the Immigration and Citizenship Workshop, local attorneys and immigration specialists will speak on the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the Houston Police Department policies, current issues affecting immigrant families and more. Participants will receive free one-on-one legal and citizenship assistance and information will be available from local service providers. All applications will be done on the computer.
“U.S. citizenship offers immigrants the opportunity to become full stakeholders in their communities. Immigration and citizenship forums, like the one we are hosting at Lone Star College-Kingwood, are important because they provide free assistance and information about the process of applying for naturalization,” said Claudia Ortega-Hogue, Texas director of Civic Engagement for NALEO Educational Fund.
This year, participants can complete their application online. To sign up as a volunteer or for more information on the Immigration and Citizenship Workshop, contact Marisol Valero at 713-669-5231.
